Citizen Science Scholarship

Scholarships are provided by Students Discover, a National Science Foundation grant funded initiative, designed to engage the public in in addressing societal needs and accelerating science, technology, and innovation. Learn more about citizen science at… https://www.citizenscience.org/about/

In the workshop, participants will learn about citizen science projects in which their students can be involved. Focal projects consider the ants in school yards (and how to use ants a focal topic in math, biology, and art), the life in homes, and the science of sourdough bread. In each of these cases participants will meet the scientists with whom they will collaborate, learn about the real science in which they can be involved and, if they choose to be involved in those projects receive kits that allow classroom/science olympiad participation.

Finally, the sourdough starters participants bring to the meeting will be part of the biggest collaborative sourdough project yet attempted, a project that aims to understand whether home bakers can intentionally favor novel species of microbes in their starters that help to make new and better kinds of breads.

THE SCHOLARSHIP COVERS:

(1) Clinic Registration fee

(2) Travel Costs

(3) Accommodations for up to 2 nights

(4) Substitute teacher pay for October 4, 2019.

QUALIFICATIONS:

(1) MUST be a science educator.

(2) Priority will be given to educators with a stated financial need.

(3) REQUIRED implementation of Citizen Science principles in the classroom.

Applications are open from August 1-31, 2019. Decisions will be announced on September 10, 2019. Scholarships cover registration, travel, accommodations, and substitute teacher pay. Winners MUST ATTEND the Oct 4th (10am-3pm) Citizen Science Workshop.
