Clarifications:

12/1/25: 2.c. At all 2026 NC Regional tournaments, teams must bring the following items for the lab portion: 

  • 3 to 4 pipettes
  • 3 – 100 mL beakers (can be plastic)
  • Safety goggles for each participant

11/18/25: The lab activity for all Regionals hosted in NC for 2026 will fall within one of the following topic areas: 
3.c. Structure, 3.d. Chemistry of Surfaces, 3.h. Optical Properties

Description:

Teams will complete lab activities and answer a series of questions related to the materials science of nanomaterials with an emphasis on chemical, physical, optical, and mechanical properties of nanomaterials. 

Materials:

One 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of paper with information on both sides in any form and from any source without any affixed labels. Participants may bring a stand-alone calculator of any type. Any or all items from the Division C Chemistry Events Lab Equipment List; these will not be provided by Event Supervisors. Participants must wear goggles, an apron or lab coat, and have skin covered from the neck down to the wrist and toes. Longer hair should be tied back. 

Event Supervisors will provide any required reagents, additional glassware, and/or reference that are needed for the tasks. 

Scoring:

Highest Score Wins. Tiebreakers are pre-selected questions.
