JANUARY
Super Sleuths
What do feet reveal about a person’s height? Forensic scientists use the bones of the feet to approximate the height of criminals. Your challenge is to combine math with forensics to see if a footprint accurately predicts the height of a subject. Hereβs how to get started:
- Have a parent or guardian remove their shoes and measure their height.
- Measure the length of the adult’s left foot from the wall to the tip of the big toe.
- Examine the numbers. Do you see a pattern? Divide the length of each person’s left foot by his/her height. Multiply the quotient by 100. What do you get?
The results of your calculations should be about 15, illustrating that the length of a person’s foot is approximately 15 percent of his or her height.
Find out the approximate height of each of your family members by measuring their foot and charting it on a spreadsheet. Use this proportion for your calculations: 15/100 = Length of Foot/x (person’s height)
Once you complete your spreadsheet, share a photo of it on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using #NCBiteSizeSO AND #SuperSleuths. THREE winners will be announced January 29th.

SkyQuest
The NASA Mars Rover Perseverance will make its landing on Feb 18th carrying the Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, on its belly. Its mission is experimental in nature and will be placed on the surface to test, for the first time ever, whether there can be powered flight in the thin Martian air. While we can’t build real helicopters at home, we can test what affects flight in a paper helicopter. Use these directions as a start, and then, use it to change at least one variable – something like type of paper, length of blades, weight, etc. to see how it affects the time it takes your helicopter to land. Record your data and show us your results on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram using #NCBiteSizeSO AND #SkyQuest. THREE winners will be announced on February 26th.
