New NC Science Olympiad Executive Director Announced
(Raleigh, NC) – North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) has named Lisa Giacomelli as the new director of one of the country’s largest Science Olympiad programs starting October 7, 2022.
Giacomelli, a longtime Science Olympiad coach, served as the head science teacher at Wilmington Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS) for nine years. During her tenure at WAAS, she started and developed one of the most competitive Science Olympiad teams in the state and nation. “This position will allow teachers and students across North Carolina to prosper from Lisa’s expertise and enthusiasm for science,” says Beth Upton, WAAS director. “Her commitment to education is paramount and, for as much as we will miss her, we know she is in the right position. She will quickly prove to be an asset and inspiration to all.”
Giacomelli succeeds Kim Gervase, who held the post for nine years, growing the program to include 36 statewide tournaments. In 2019, North Carolina had the largest Science Olympiad program in the country. “We are so fortunate to hire Lisa to lead the NC Science Olympiad. I believe she is the perfect person for this position at this crucial time,” said Jason Painter, director of the Science House outreach program at NC State, which manages the NC Science Olympiad. “She loves Science Olympiad so much and I have no doubt that she will use her passion for science and education to make this great program even greater. She is creative, passionate, innovative and respected in her community, across the state and throughout the nation. I cannot wait for her to get started.”
As executive director, Giacomelli will work closely with staff and regional directors to ensure that the program can continue to serve and inspire K-12 students and teachers. “I am honored to be in a position to advocate for STEM education,” Giacomelli said. “I am committed to serving our schools and communities across the state of North Carolina to ensure that more students benefit from the lifelong impacts of Science Olympiad.”
